Once the experiment is plantain related, I can almost never go wrong with Le Hubs. Last night, I decided to serve plantain and eggs with a flair, we loved it and I love that he loved it too.

Recipe
6 Ripe Plantains
5 Eggs
1 large Green Bell pepper
1 large Red Bell Pepper
2 tomatoes
2 Sausage
1/4 cup Shredded beef
1 Bouillon Cube
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
Olive oil
Salt to taste

Boil Plantain with skin on, till its nearly cooked, then peel and mash in a bowl.
In a tart pan, use some cooking spray and proceed to spread the mashed plantain.
Put the mashed plantain into an oven pre-heated to 350 °C .
Chop the peppers, tomatoes and sausages in a pan.
Sautée the mince meat for 5 mins, then add peppers, bouillon cubes, salt and pepper.

Turn the heat down, then proceed to break and whisk eggs.
Add oil to the sautéeing vegetables, once its hot, add the eggs.
Stir all in, but don’t let the eggs really fry.
Turn  off the heat and spread the eggs over the plantain in the oven.
Let it bake for an additional 25 mins.
Allow it to cool down before you cut with a pizza cutter.

The Fitness Manual With Selema Enang: No Gym, No Problem

A lot of people use reasons like 'I don't have a gym subscription' or 'I don't have time' to not do something about their fitness. But if you really think about it, these are all EXCUSES. Yes,excuses. Because if you really want this, you will be finding ways to do get it done rather than making excuses. You will be willing to do whatever it takes.

You do not need a gym to get fit, neither do you need 3 hours of exercise everyday. You can workout 3 hours everyday for a year and still not be close to your goals. You can also give your all for 30-45 minutes everyday and achieve your desired results too. Its always quality over quantity. There is no point spending 3 hours exercising if your intensity is equivalent to that of frying chin chin.

That being said, this is a routine you should definitely try. All you need are two plastic bottles filled with water and sealed tightly. Perform all exercises with the bottles except the fire hydrants and the plank.

If you do not own a skipping rope, do rope- less skips.

Jog in a static position for 2 minutes
> Pulse squats 4 x 15
> Rest 30 secs
> Fire hydrants 5 x 15 each leg
> Rest 30 secs
> Jumping jacks 30

> Rest 1 minute
> Shoulder press 4 x 12
> Rest 30 secs
> Lateral raises 4 x 15
> Rest 30 secs
> Front raises 4 x 15
> Rest 30 secs
> Stiff leg Deadlifts 4 x 15

> Rest for 1 min before beginning this circuit.
> All 4 exercises completed without rest = 1 set
> Rest 1 minute between sets.
> Circuit x 3
> Russian twists 30 secs
> Jumping jacks 30 secs
> Skips 30 secs
> Plank 30 secs

Please research for demonstrations of these exercises and proper forms of execution.

All Or Nothing Fitness With Dizzy: Misconceptions

Hey there, I was at the gym the other day and I asked a lady to do a tricep workout, she immediately replied: "I don't want to be grab", my first response would have been laughing out loud, but that’s disrespectful.  I had to explain the concept of weight training to her and how it helps with fat loss. Many women, especially here in Africa have this perception that lifting automatically makes you manly.  I find that funny, I remember being criticized by a fellow trainer for making my female clients lift.

A high percentage of the women in the gym come there strictly to get a stomach reduction. And they spend hours on the treadmill followed by an abdominal circuit. If this is you, please read carefully, DOING 1000 CRUNCHES EVERY DAY WON'T TAKE OFF THE BELLY FAT. Secondly, lifting WILL NOT make you manly (whatever that is). However, lifting is bound to assist in fat loss as muscle gain leads to increased metabolism at rest. Research shows that long term cardio is not the most effective way to burn fat. That is not to say it doesn't help, it just doesn't take it to the max. If you want to completely reach fat loss max and get rid of belly fat, you need a combination of different factors.

I'm just here to talk about the misconception that exists about how lifting makes women manly.  That's wrong!  You can maximize fat loss with an effective weight training program, HIIT,  LISS and proper dieting (there are a lot of misconceptions about diets as well), so for your gateway to fat Loss, make sure you keep reading these posts, a lot of tips would be coming soon.

Now, try this weight loss challenge for this week:

PS: If you don't know or understand any of the exercises or body movements above, please try searching online. Thank you! Till next time.

Plantain Goodness with Ounjealadun: Plantain Sandwich

Hey Gang!

Just because its Fryday and we're supposed to be frying plantain today, (plantain lifestyle) we will be bringing you interesting plantain recipes by our good friend, Omolabake of Ounjealadun every Friday so that you guys can be more experimental with your plantain and not get bored with only frying! Thank God its Fryday and most of us have the weekend to relax, we will be bringing you these recipes hoping that you will find time over the weekend to try them and give us feedback. So, let's start this week with the Plantain Sandwich!

I used to think I loved plantain until I met Le Hubs, his next best food asides beans is plantain, one food you’d always find in my store is a bunch of ripe plantains, hence the need to always find ingenious ways to  make plantain, this is one of his favorites aside the plantain waffle
Now this is so easy to make:

Recipe
Ripe plantain
Sautéed Bacon slices
Lettuce
Omelette
Slices of tomatoes
Low cholesterol oil (olive or sunflower would be great)

Procedure
Cut plantain length wise into 2 or 3 strips.
Fry slightly in oil and take out the plantain strips.
Flatten the plantain using a Tostonera or simple household items e.g a ladle or rolling pin, I used the flat side of an Ice breaker to smack the plantain flat.
Return into the oil and finish frying. Lay on paper towels to absorb the oil.

Now assemble. Plantain base, some lettuce, tomatoes, Omelette, a plantain slice , some lettuce, bacon slice and cover with plantain slice.

You can cut them up into very pretty bite sized pieces like this and serve them as finger food when hosting guests
Bite Size Plantain Sandwiches
Enjoy!

The Fitness Manual with Selema Enang: The Perfect Body

THE PERFECT BODY!

I have probably been writing this post for a week, wondering what I’m going to post first because I seem to have a lot to say, how I want it to seem and how much I want you to learn from our encounters on this platform every Thursday. So, I decided to start from the beginning of every nutrition and fitness journey. I hope that in a bid to express my passion for nutrition and fitness, I will help people find theirs.  My name is Selema and I write for The Fitness Manual.

Often, I hear people talk about how much they hate their bodies, what they want to change about their bodies, how ‘imperfect’ their bodies are or how much better they would look if they had Andy’s legs or Bola’s arms. They stand in front of the mirror every morning, tearing themselves apart until there is nothing left. Then they get dressed and walk away extremely unhappy and more hate now present in their heart for themselves than before they even stared at their reflection. All because they allow society tell them how they should look, and that if they do not look that way they are not and will never be enough.

First, you need to understand that being healthy comes in different sizes.  Ayo’s look when he/she is healthy will not be the same look for you when you are healthy. People also need to stop judging how they ought to look based on magazine images. These images have been made to look perfect, they hav the perfect lighting, perfect makeup, perfect angles and perfect edits. Make no mistake that after the models in these magazines step away from the camera, the edits and the perfect lights, they too are unhappy about not looking exactly how they looked in the magazines. Because once again society has edited what they truly look like to achieve a ‘perfect’. An illusion!

Love yourself, because if you don’t, no amount of weight loss can fix that. It will never be enough. There will always be something about your body you don’t like. Losing weight does not fix your inability to love yourself. If all you can see when you look in the mirror are your thick thighs, thicker arms or how much smaller your lower body is, then you have so much work to do, not just dropping just a few pounds.

Accept your reflection, be dead to the critics and the negative voices in your head, be dead to all the things you think ‘are wrong’ about your body and work hard every day to be the best version of yourself. Turn all the things you think your genes have cheated you into your strengths. You need to understand that this fitness journey is not a 4-week-lose-it-all or an 8-week-break-necks-by-walking-down-the-street program. It is a lifestyle, getting better every day and becoming stronger than you were yesterday. It takes hard work, patience, CONSISTENCY, discipline, will power, determination and most importantly, self-love.

There will be those time you will look in the mirror and see no difference, you will have to love yourself in those times and through those times so that you can love yourself beyond the physical to keep going even when the instant gratification effect is absent. So, I am not asking you to be perfect, or to be a size 0. All I’m asking every Thursday is for you take your health seriously and start working towards a better, healthier you. Like it or not, this singular request is the most important thing and the easiest person to love on this planet is YOU.

Thank You.

All Or Nothing Fitness with Dizzy: Mind Over Matter

I'm just here thinking of how and what exactly I'm going to start with. Well, with fitness, it really doesn't matter how you start, but that you started. Fitness is a journey and not a destination. So hello, I'm Dizzy, writing for AONFitness (All or Nothing Fitness) and we’re going to be on a fitness journey together.

What exactly is this fitness and healthy lifestyle we talk about? Or, what exactly is this fitness thing we’re so enthusiastic about?  Simply put, it is the general state of well  being of the mind and body. A lot of people jump into things without actually preparing their mind. At AONFitness, we believe that the true success to a fitness (physical) journey, begins with a fit mind. It is true that as time goes on, your will and desire will either appreciate or depreciate, but you need to be strong for yourself and be stubborn about your goals. Like we always say, “No Pain, No Gain” Then again, you are already in pain, your fitness journey only helps you to get reward for your pain.

The mind is the most important thing, a lot of us concentrate on what we have to do, the perfect weather,  the perfect environment or even the perfect partner. Some just look in the mirror and give up!  Then the tinny negative voices in their heads come out and say “when am I going to lose all of this fat?” Or “where is the muscle going to come from?”  These are all nothing but perfect excuses to keep you waiting for the perfect situation.  I’m sorry to tell you this, but its very honest and its coming from the bottom of my heart, there will NEVER be a perfect condition or situation, you have to make every workout the perfect session.

You need to work on your mind and pace yourself in order to find time and strength. Start from the most basic exercise you know before you grow out of your comfort zone. Start making gradual adjustments when you feel like you are getting comfortable with a particular workout or exercise and don’t be scared to try new things.  You can start with as little as 20 jumping jacks daily or just do some push-ups, challenge yourself every day. You don't need money for that, all you need is a little over 10 minutes dedication.

So, what exactly am I saying? That you need to put your mind to it! Start your fitness journey today. Don't look in the mirror and get discouraged. You need to encourage and motivate yourself, because; if you ate yourself to obesity, you are going to work yourself out of it, and NO, it will not be easy. You can bet your next burger on it, it won't, but it certainly isn't as difficult as the negativity in your mind is making it seem.

Changing your body and lifestyle is a marathon race and not a sprint, it'll take time, it'll take consistency,  it'll take effort and you need to love, understand and embrace your journey. It doesn’t matter how you start, but that you have started. We are all in this together. So, let's get started with this challenge. Please search the internet for graphic images of any exercise or movements you do not understand.
